Winter is the worst time for anyone to be driving, especially our children because they’re so inexperienced. The cold temperatures bring ice, snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Where we live, there are field drainage ditches along the sides of the roads that can sometimes be up to 10 feet deep!
We let our teen, a relatively new driver, practice driving during inclement weather as often as we can, but we also take steps to make sure that he’s safe when he’s on the road. One of the first things we did when winter hit was to put brand new Cooper® winter tires on the car he drives the most.
Why We Feel Safer With Cooper® Tires On Our Car
Studded winter or snow tires have higher traction qualities under most winter weather conditions, which means our teen is likely to be slipping and sliding when he’s driving. I’ve driven before with all-season tires on my car, but this is the first experience I’ve ever had with winter tires and BOY does it make a difference!
The tread compound of all–season tires can harden when temps drop. This means there’s less traction between the road and your tires. But winter tires like our new Cooper Weather-Master WSC use special rubber compounds that stay pliable in the cold. This means that we get better road grip and improved braking, even when roads are covered in snow.
Both my husband and my father-in-law are car guys; they have driven and fixed all kinds of makes and models. In fact, working at a car dealership is how I met my husband. Part of his job at the time was the best tires for the best price for our customers, so he knows his tires. So when my husband and his dad make a point to mention the amazing grip the Cooper® Weather-Master WSC winter tires offer, that definitely means something.
And though these are my first set of winter tires, I definitely notice a difference between these and the tires that were previously on my car. I feel a lot more confident and safe now driving the kids to and from their dad’s, Girl Scouts, school, and all the other places that make me feel like a weekday taxi service.
More so, I feel better about letting my teenager drive, even on the icy and snow covered roads that are so common here in Ohio. And, to extend the life of our everyday tires and our new Cooper® winter tires, we store the winter tires during spring, summer, and fall so we can use them for several seasons!
